Thursdays Adult Classes
The Drawing Class has been going well. The artists are a bit shy about showing off their work, but we were able to sneak a photo to show you how productive there were.
The next class with be Ornament Painting, Dec. 3, 9 and 16. This will be taught by Courtney Dentel, who conducted the Pottery Painting Class this summer. The price for this class will depend on the ornament you choose to paint. The selection and sign-up sheet will be available next week at the library. Hope to see lots of you there!

Spiders
The spiders came!
Liz Thompson, the Batphile who visited us this summer to teach us about bats, came again on Wednesday to teach us about spiders. Obviously, Liz has some "creepy" issues. Luckily for us.
Naturally, the kids had a great time. One got to dress as a spider (for identification purposes), and several got to pretend to be the various types of insect catching spiders. Did you know some spiders catch their prey with spit?!
We also learned that spider venom is being studied for medicinal purposes, and that the U.S. government is trying to re-create spider silk for its strength.
Thank you Liz! What creepy creature will you study next?

Bullis Open House
On Sunday, October 4, the Bullis Committee hosted an Open House honoring benefactor Miss Jeannette Aurelia Bullis, her family and their contributions. Special guest, "Nettie" was there to welcome the guests.
Included were a display of special Bullis books, a demonstration of Bullis book repair and refreshments (special bologna sandwiches, one of Nettie's favorite dinners). Also, history buff and producer, Joseph Hill, graciously shared his research on General John Lapham Bullis and the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts that he lead.
We thank all who came and hoped that you enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did.

Grant for Children's DVDs
Many thanks to the Friends of the Macedon Public Library for their grant "Promoting Juvenile Learning and Literacy Through DVDs". With these funds we were able to purchase DVDs based on books as an inducement to read.
They are displayed in the children's section with the books they are based on. We have encouraged our patrons to take both home.
Come in and "check them out".

Fall Story Time Schedule
The Summer Reading Program, Be Creative at Your Library, was a huge success!! The kids had a great deal of fun and the staff is exhausted, all signs that we did something right!
So now it's time to plan for back to school and our fall programming. Our first six weeks will start the week of September 21 and end Halloween week, October 27. We have the usual 2 year-old story times on Tuesday morning, 10:10 and 10:40. 3, 4, and 5 year-old story times are on Monday mornings at 10:30 and Tuesday afternoons at 1:30. And our Wednesdays would not be Wacky without stories and crafts at 4:00. A schedule is available at our front desk.
Come in to register or call us at 315-986-5932.

Adult Pottery Painting Class
We all had way too much fun in our pottery painting class Thursday nights. I am usually unable to draw a decipherable stick figure, yet was able to make a beautiful tile trivet with the help of creative painting techniques and stencils!
But what was more important was the giggling and camaraderie! Thank you Courtney, I hope to visit you at the The Pottery Spot in Palmyra and increase my painting skills and confidence.
Our next set of classes are:
September 10 - Card Stamping
September 17 - Card Embossing
September 24 - Quilling
There are examples of each of these card crafts on display at the front circulation desk and the reference section in the Macedon Public Library. However, it is suggested that if you are taking the embossing class, you take the stamping class first as there is a progression. Quilling can be stand alone class.

Newbery Challenge Pizza Party
The annual Newbery Challenge Pizza Party, our final event of the summer reading program, was this afternoon, and everyone seemed to have a great time. The challenge is to read six Newbery books (winners or honor books) from different time periods over the course of the summer. We had 12 children and 3 adults finish the challenge.
I am always amazed at the diversity of books that the kids choose to read, and yet there are always a few standards. I asked the same questions: "What was your favorite book?" and "What book was your least favorite?" I was surprised this year as to how many kids struggled to find a least favorite, and usually it was the ones they thought would be the easiest read. We were also surprised as to how many of these books were the first in a series, and how many have been made into movies.

Summer Classes
The Summer Reading Program is technically over, and what a lot of fun we had! In addition to all of the performers, the last three Thursdays were filled with laughter and learning!
July 31st was our annual Geocaching trek. Our ever helpful Phil Klingler again took a group of children and their parents to Bullis park, where he taught them how to work a GPS system and locate special treasures.
On August 6th we tried something new - a Clowning Around Workshop taught by magician and clown, Ron Cain. The kids learned the basics to juggling, paper air plane flying, making balloon shapes and the proper way to wear the red nose.
Since our theme this summer was "Be Ceative at Your Library", we had MaryJane Wenner bring all of her "stuff" and let everyone who came create Scrap Art.
We hope everyone had as good a summer as we did!!!

Wild Wings
Wild Wings brought six beautiful raptors (carnivore birds of prey), to visit us yesterday. We started out on the hill, but the heat and bees soon chased us inside. However, even with the change of plans we learned about both the birds and this wonderful not-for-profit educational organization that houses and cares for permanently injured birds.
We are all invited to their facility at Mendon Ponds, where we can view all 24 birds and even volunteer.
Thank you Pat and Buzz for a very informative afternoon.

BATPHILE
Last week Batphile, Liz Thompson, visited the Macedon Public Library and introduced us to The Mysterious World of Bats.
Liz was very informative and showed us slides of bats from around the world. Did you know that there are over 1,100 kinds of bats, but only three kinds are considered "vampires"?. None of them live in North America. So what's all the fuss about?
The kids had lots of questions, and we even had a few adults come on their own to learn about these fascinating creatures. Here, Jacob learns that with his weight and size he would need very long wings to fly like a bat.
Thank you, Liz. And great article about you in Sunday's Democrat & Chronicle!!

Adult Crocheting Class
The Adult Crocheting Class, funding by the Friends of the Macedon Public Library Endowment Grant, has been a great success!!!!
The beginners mastered single crocheting and almost mastered double crocheting. Those more experienced learned additional skills to enhance their crocheting technique. Fun was had by all!!
NEXT ON THE AGENDA: Pottery Painting Project starting this Thursday, August 6th. This can be up to three weeks, or as little as one, depending on the project you choose. Please stop into the Macedon Public Library and peruse your choices.
