Christmas Tree Display

The George Eastman House is having a tabletop tree display and auction through December 18th, and we are fortunate to be represented by another beautiful tree donated by the Friends of the Macedon Public Library.

Pre-lit, three-foot trees decorated by local businesses are displayed throughout the historic house. The trees are available for purchase in a silent auction, the proceeds of which go toward providing fresh flowers in the mansion year-round.

So, visit our tree and maybe you can bring it home to your house!!

Holidays and Remembrances

It's holiday time!
We have all kinds of holiday books displayed for your convenience:
cook books for the feasts and treats you'll be preparing
craft books for all the presents you'll be making
holiday stories to relax with after all your hard work is done

Also, in case you haven't heard, Friday is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.  We have some wonderful books available for those who would like to remember, or learn about, our 35th President.

And a reminder, we will be closing on Wednesday, November 27th, at 6:00 p.m. instead of 8:00 p.m., so we can get an early start on our Thanksgiving dinner.  And we will reopen regular hours Friday, November 29th, 10:00a.m. - 5:00p.m.

Rand Darrow's Puppet Show

The kids of Macedon were treated to a unique puppet show on their half-day of school Wednesday.  Former art teacher, Rand Darrow, showed us some of  the sculptures and puppets that he created, and told some of his Slavic folk tales from his new book Witches, Wolves and Water Spirits

Treaty Belt in Bullis Room

Currently on display in the Bullis Room at the Macedon Public Library is a reproduction of the Canandaigua Treaty Wampum Belt of 1794.  The original belt was commissioned to symbolize the Canandaigua Treaty between  the United States of America and the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy - Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk and Tuscarora, signed on November 11, 1794.

The belt will be on display at the library until November 15.

This treaty is still commemorated today.   Treaty Day is on November 11th and officials from both governments will be on hand in Canandaigua for the commemoration.  For more information visit http://www.ganondagan.org/TreatyCelebration.html

A grant from the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library has made it possible for us to hold Saturday TRASH TO TREASURE ART WORKSHOPS.  On October 26 they will be making ENVELOPE BOOKS from 10-noon.  These wonderful little books will hold keepsakes, photos, etc. for gift-giving or remembering the holidays.  There is a $3.00 fee to cover supplies.

Saturday, November 2, is ANTIQUES APPRAISAL DAY.  In order to accommodate as many patrons as possible, there will be a strict appraisal limit of two (2) items per person, and the items must be small enough to be carried in by one (1) person.  Registration is required.  And thanks to a grant from the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library, there will be no fee charged for these appraisals.

Every Thursday at 2 p.m. there is MAH JONG in the community room.  Novices and experienced players are always welcome!  Please leave word for Karen Yatteau at the library's front desk if you are interested in joining.  There is always lots of laughter!

Dig Into Reading!!

Wow, how it really been over a month since I last posted?!  I guess I was busier than even I thought.

Well, the summer reading program has begun, so we will DIG INTO READING!

Lots of kids and adults have been coming into the library since school let out three weeks ago, and our official start date for the summer reading program was July 8th.  It has been busy, and fun!  We've had crafts, stories, and a magic show (thank you, Steve Ingraham), reading with therapy dogs, lots of dinky prizes collected, many volunteers coming in and out, and adults submitting their book reviews.

And Monday we get to do it all over again.....................................................

What's Been Happening

WOW, has it really been over a month since I last posted?!  I knew I was busy, and forgetful, but that's a long time!

Lots of things have been happening at the library.  We've continued our Thursday craft night, and our Mah Jong afternoons.  June gave a presentation to the Macedon Seniors about farm life past and present.  She also visited the Middle and High Schools to talk about Nettie Bullis.  The Friends of the Macedon Library sponsored a movie presentation of "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", and also a  presentation of Classic Toys given by the Vice President of Collections at the Strong Museum of Play, Christopher Bensch.

And we've finished the story times until the summer reading program begins in July.  That's what Pam and I have been working on.  Scheduling programs, gathering prizes, finding crafters, ordering dinky prizes, etc.  Our theme this year is "Dig Into Reading", and we have lots of fun things planned.  So, remember to register your children, and yourself, on June 24!

Poetry

Today is Poem in Your Pocket Day!
Treat yourself - read some poetry.

The Library Poem
by Julia Donaldson

Everyone is welcome to walk through the door.
It really doesn't matter if you're rich or poor.
There are books in boxes and books on shelves.
They're free for you to borrow, so help yourselves.

Come and meet your heroes, old and new,
From William the Conqueror to Winnie the Pooh.
You can look into the Mirror or read The Times,
Or bring along a toddler to chant some rhymes.

The librarian's a friend who loves to lend,
So see if there's a book that she can recommend.
Read that book, and if you're bitten
You can borrow all the other ones the author's written.

Are you into battles or biography?
Are you keen on gerbils or geography?
Gardening or ghosts? Sharks or science fiction?
There's something here for everyone, whatever your addiction.

There are students revising, deep in concentration,
And school kids doing projects, finding inspiration.
Over in the corner there's a table with seating,
So come along and join in the Book Club meeting.

Yes, come to the library! Browse and borrow,
And help make sure it'll still be here tomorrow.
