Time to celebrate! Get connected @ your library, this week and year-round! Here are some great ways to do just that!

Download an ebook or e-audiobook at http://owwl2go.owwl.org, powered by OverDrive^®. This Web site is the Pioneer Library System’s gateway to nearly 800 children’s and teen book titles that can be listened to on an iPod^®, mp3 player, or computer. You can also suggest titles for the library to purchase and keep a “wish list” of future books to read.

Try out a book-focused Web site like GoodReads, LibraryThing, or Shelfari. Look at the Pioneer Library System’s Web site, www.owwl.org. For readers, there are numerous booklists under the “Readers’ Corner” tab plus an electronic newsletter, “Teen Scene,” covering new books just for you. The newsletter is a free subscription service and you can choose to receive an e-mail whenever the booklists are updated.

Check out some favorite DVDs or CDs from MPL. Learn how to place a hold on items the library doesn’t own, like video games, anime titles, or recordings of your favorite performer. There’s no cost to have them sent to Macedon for you, from anywhere in the four counties of the Pioneer Library System.

Something Different for Wednesday

At the request of a regular patron whose grandchildren were visiting for the week, we had a special Wacky Wednesday. Instead of the usual stories and a craft, we had stories about dogs (with our therapy dogs) and then got to watch some dog training. John and Marile were gracious enough to bring in Tessa and Macy to demonstrate how they train them for hunt competitions and also obedience. Although we enjoyed watching the dogs retrieve and follow other commands, the best part was playing with them!!!

Palmyra Library

We have enjoyed having many of Palmyra's patrons spend some time with us while the Palmyra Library is closed for their move into their new building at 402 Main Street. It is always nice to meet and help new people. It has also been an opportunity for us show our appreciation for all that Palmyra did for us and our patrons during our times of trouble in 2001, and the opening of our new library in 2003.

We wish the Palmyra Community Library, their staff and patrons success in their new home, which will open Monday, December 19!!

We had lots of fun at Pajama Story Time last night. I cannot thank our community enough for bringing their children out on a school night. I hope parents were not thinking that we would lull their children to sleep for them - not with Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed!!!!

I especially want to thank our special guest reader, Phil Klingler. It was a wonderful change for the children to hear someone other than me reading to them. Phil has such a deep, soothing voice he had the kids mesmerized (and giggling).

Halloween Magic

When you plan a magic show for 2:00 in the afternoon on a Sunday, the day before Halloween, you never know what you're going to get. Even with the infamous and popular Jim Bush at the helm. But Pam and I set up the Community Room with hope, put on our costumes, set out the candy and waited.................

And do you know what we got? A packed room!! Lots of kids, parents and grandparents. Most of the kids dressed in costume and it was so much fun! Of course, Mr. Bush did not disappoint. And those who have never had the pleasure of seeing him perform commented on how funny he is. We may have to make this an annual event!

Fall Book Sale

The Friends of the Macedon Public Library has another successful book sale last week. In fact, they had the second highest monetary total since they started keeping track in 2004!! These proceeds will go to the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library, who supports such wonderful things as guest speakers, Thursday night crafts and materiel grants, just to name a few.

So, a big thank you to all those who donated, sorted, stored, toted, categorized, sold and most importantly bought the books!
Also, a individual shout-out to all the wonderful Palmyra-Macedon High School student athletes who volunteered to help carry 334 boxes of books into the Community Room for the sale.

Autism and Asperger Books

I recently went to a seminar to learn more about how to make children with autism or Asperger's syndrome more comfortable in the library. I learned much and was able to purchase some books that should be a help to us all. The following have now been added to our collection:

Therapy Dog: A Success Story

I wanted to share a wonderful story with you........................

We are very fortunate to have John Hamilton bring his therapy dog, Tessa, to our Tuesday afternoon story times. John and Tessa have been visiting us for about 10 months, and the children that come on Tuesdays really love having her around. And then there is Cameron.

When I first told Cameron about Tessa visiting, he refused to attend story time that week. His mom and aunt talked to him every day after that, explaining that Tessa would sit on the other side of the room and that he did not have to pet her, or even go near her. The next few weeks were worrisome, as Cameron would sit on the opposite side of the room with his head down. We even talked about the possibility of ending Tessa's visits because story time is really about the children and we didn't want Cameron to be uncomfortable, or viewing the library as a place to fear. But Cameron was brave and kept coming, and so did Tessa. Cameron kept his distance, but participated more and more in story time. By spring he was actively watching Tessa. By summer he was willing to pet her on her back - once.

And here is a picture of Cameron and Tessa taken this week.

I cannot thank John and Tessa enough for their understanding and patience.
And I am so proud of Cameron.

What's Your Story?

A Memoir Writing Workshop

A four week supportive, fun and free writing workshop series to help people get their family stories down on paper. Everyone has a tale to tell and the workshops will focus the participants on how to start and keep going.

The workshops will take place At the Red Creek Free Library from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on November 4th and 18th and from 10:00 AM to noon on December 2nd and 16th. No previous writing experience is needed.

The workshops will be facilitated by Susannah Risley, an award-winning fiction writer from Schenectady, NY. She has taught writing workshops across NYS in libraries, schools and senior centers for more than 10 years.

This event was funded in part by Poets & Writers, Inc. with public funds from New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Fall Story Times

We are now starting to register the children for our story times. Beginning the week of September 19th, the story times will be as follows:

For 2 year olds: Tuesday mornings at 10:10 or 10:40.
                            Parents or caregivers should plan on attending class as well.

For 3, 4, and 5 year olds: Mondays at 10:30 a.m. or Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m.
                                         Younger siblings are welcome, but if they become a distraction we ask that
                                          you take them out of the room.

Wacky Wednesdays: Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. for those in kindergarten through 4th grade.

Legos at the Library

Tuesday was a great time for anyone 12 or under here at the library (and actually, some of the adults had fun too)! Everyone was allowed to come in and make whatever they wanted with the thousands of Legos we had available. No time limit, no pressure. So come in and view the amazing creations in our display case (until Monday, August 29)!

Newbery Challenge

Every year the Macedon Public Library challenges their summer readers to read 6 Newbery winner or honor books, thus the "Newbery Challenge" This year we made it a little harder, by requiring them to read one non-fiction Newbery book, and 3 books published during certain years, as well as 2 Newberys of their choice. We are proud to announce that this year 13 readers completed the challenge, ranging in age from 6 to 16!
We celebrate this accomplishment with a pizza party sponsored by the Reliant Community Credit Union, were we talk about the books we loved, and the ones we didn't. The readers also receive a new book to bring home, and other prizes.

Congratulations, and we look forward to seeing you all back next year!

One World, Many Stories - Week 6

So, we finished our last week of summer story times with a blast. Lots of fun as we visited our last continent, but even more fun when WOWEE (World of Wildlife Educational Encounters) visited on Wednesday and brought animals from around the world. We saw a chinchilla taking a sand bath, got the pet the potbellied pig, tried to get the cockatiel to dance for us, and got totally grossed out by the hissing cockroaches. There were lots more animals, and we "traveled around the world", but in the end we all had our favorites. Mine was Honey, the sugar glider. What was yours?

I have been so busy with the children's summer program I have neglected some of the other things going on at the library. For the past 3 weeks we have had a mask making class conducted by Amy O'Connor. There were some beautiful finished products, and loads of fun along the way.

One World, Many Stories - Week #5

We had a quieter week than last. This must be a popular vacation week, or everyone is at the Wayne County Fair. But everyone had lots of fun at story times, and our weekly reading with dogs (Tessa and Macy this week).

And Melanie Zimmer was back to run her scarf marionette workshop, where we made beautiful marionette puppets and learned how to manipulate them!

One World, Many Stories - Week #4

Wow! We were busy this week!
Melanie Zimmer was here with her Dancing Bear Theater to present "The Littlest Pirate". I was very impressed with her giant-sized theater and the beauty of her puppets. We all laughed when the puppets wouldn't wake up for the show, and were in awe of the mighty pirate vanquishing sea serpent! A few of us might have even been a bit afraid of the awful pirate, Eddie Snickerbucket.

After the pirates and puppets left, and the Wacky Wednesday class "visited" Europe, juggler Nate the Great came and taught some of our teens to juggle. Nate is always fun to have around, and the kids learned quite a lot of skills from him. Who knew we had such talent in Macedon!

Today, we are grateful to Phil Klingler who happily returned to conduct
another Bridge Building Workshop. I am never sure who has more fun at these things, Phil or the kids. But there were lots of smiling faces and some fantastic bridges when all was said and done.

One World, Many Stories - Weeks #2 and #3

Wow, we have had a busy two weeks! I can happily report that more and more kids have been coming to our weekly story times. I guess swimming lessons are finally ending. It's great to see all of these happy faces!

Despite the record breaking heat last week, we had a great turn-out for Bongo Joe's World Tour of Music. Joe and his friends entertained us with drums, mandolin, harmonica and other instruments from all over the world. Some of his audience even got to participate in the music making, singing and hula dancing!

We honed our woodworking skills making Shaker peg boards last week, and this week improved our fine motor skills making beautiful beaded bracelets. Thanks Denny and Kaitlyn for your patience and expertise!

Next week:

Melanie Zimmer and Dancing Bear Puppet Theater will present "The Littlest Pirate" on Wednesday, August 3, at 2:00 p.m. in our Community Room. Following that at 4:00 p.m., Nate the Great will teach our teenagers how to juggle. The public is welcome to the puppet show. Registration is required for the juggling workshop. One World, Many Stories - Week #1

So, we have made it through our first week of the Summer Reading Program, and what a great time! Our Monday and Tuesday story times were well attended. Wacky Wednesday was a lot of fun, and we followed it up with a Friends of the Macedon Public Library sponsored visit from Nathan Chronister, an ornithopter expert. He taught us the history of flight and demonstrated some of his cool ornithopters (a wing-flapping flying device). We also had lots of kids come and read to Tessa, Macy and Gus, our therapy dogs. And we finished the week up with a great round of geocaching! Whew!

Next week: more story times, more dogs and "Bongo Joe's World Tour of Music". Barrel of Fun Productions, will present Bongo Joe and his friends Gunther the Gorilla and Pooky the Platypus in this interactive program utilizing percussion and stringed instruments from around the world. On Wednesday, August 3 at 4:00 p.m., juggler Nate the Great is returning to the Macedon Public Library. This year he will be holding a juggling workshop for teenagers. Nate learned to juggle when he was seven, one stubborn afternoon at the YMCA with 3 tennis balls he borrowed from his Dad’s tennis bag. He has been juggling and doing acrobatics-stuff ever since. He is just clever enough to imitate the best internet juggling videos, and also just dim and determined enough to imitate those videos well. So if you are age 13 or older and have always wanted to learn a cool skill to impress your friends, or just keep your hands busy, stop in and sign-up for Nate’s workshop.

On Thursday, August 11 at 2:00 p.m., Melanie Zimmer of Dancing Bear Puppet Theater is going to show us how to make a marionette out of a scarf and then teach us how to manipulate it like a real puppeteer! The Dancing Bear Puppet Theater is an itinerant theater located in Central New York that travels throughout the Northeastern United States and beyond performing stories of imagination and enchantment. Melanie and her puppets will be visiting us on Wednesday, August 3 at 2:00 p.m., to perform “The Littlest Pirate”, but has agreed to return with this wonderful workshop. As Melanie says, “Storytelling is my passion, puppetry is my joy, and the Dancing Bear Puppet Theater is my stage.” So, please join us for the performance and, if you are age 8 or older, come learn how to make your own joy on August 11.

Oh my. Things have been so crazy here getting ready for the Summer Reading Program, that I haven't blogged about all that we are doing in July. So here goes.........................

Our children's summer program sign-ups have been going on for the past two weeks and will continue for a while yet. Story times and special programs begin Monday, July 11th. Apart from the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday story times for different age groups, we have the following programs in July:
Ornithopter Show at 4:00, Wednesday, July 13th
Geocaching at 1:00, Thursday, July 14th
"Bongo Joe's World Tour of Music" at 2:00, Wednesday, July 20th
Woodworking Workshop at 1:00, Thursday, July 21st
Beaded Bracelet Workshop at 1:00, Thursday, July 28th

In addition, we have therapy dogs available for the kids to read to every Wednesday morning. Registration is required.

For our adult workshops on Thursday nights:
July 14 is Needle Arts for those working on a project and want company
July 21, 28 and August 4 is going to be a three-part class making Paper Mache Masks. Here students will gain awareness and understanding of the uses of masks in many cultures through time, then they will design and produce their own unique mask.

I know there will be lots more exciting stuff happening.

What a busy, kid-filled day!!

It started out with me, and Sheila from the Palmyra Library, going to the morning meeting at the Intermediate School. Principal Chip Dolce was kind enough to allow us a few minutes to talk about our summer reading program and encourage all the kids to come to their library of choice.

In the evening, June was off to the Primary School's annual Book Fair and Ice Cream Social (yum!). Principal Brian Brooks invited members of the community to let the family know about kid-friendly opportunities available to them this summer. June was able to reconnect with old friends, and made some new ones!

We ended the night with our Pajama Story Time! I always love to see the kids in their jammies and laugh with them at the end of the day.

We have officially ended our story times for school year. It is Pam and Kathy's time to organize and get ready for the summer reading program. One of us is even getting to go on vacation first!

The theme for the summer program is One World, Many Stories. This gives us the opportunity to explore legends, people and animals from all over the world! It should be an exciting summer, and we have lots planned. We have visitors scheduled who will introduce us to puppets, animals and music, plus some very cool workshops.

This summer we are also trying to encourage more of our teens to come to the library with book discussions, book reviews, and even some juggling.

Don't forget, next week the Friends of the Macedon Public Library are sponsoring The White Deer at the Seneca Army Depot, Wednesday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m., a talk given by Dennis Money, Conservationist and a board member of Seneca White Deer, Inc.

Currently, white deer account for about 200 of the approximately 800 deer which roam within the fenced, former Seneca Army Depot. Come and hear about the history and the future of the white deer and the efforts to preserve the unique wildlife and military history of this site.

Daisy Troop Visit

Daisy Troop 448 braved the snowy elements Wednesday night and came for a visit to the library. I read them a story, talked about library rules and policies, and then we took a tour. They were most interested in the Bullis Room and the Dolls from Around the World window display. But I hope they had as much fun as I did.

After our tour all the girls were presented with their own library cards. So now we have even more readers!!

Well, we had another full house last Thursday as two of our favorite groups shared the Community Room!

Linda Selbert was back for another painting class. This time she tapped into our Irish side before St. Patrick's Day, teaching everyone how to paint shamrocks on a piece of slate.

They were joined by our regular Needle Arts group, who worked on and displayed a variety of their beautiful handiwork!

Quilling and Other Crafts

Last week we had a full house for our Quilling craft class. As you can see, there was much concentration, but the results were fabulous!

Thank you Kathy Roberts for teaching us this old art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped and glued together to create all kinds of decorative designs.

Girl Scouts Adopt Chapter Books

So, yesterday was a bit problematic.............................

Back by popular demand, we were anticipating a big turn out for our second Pajama Story Time However the weather was against us. The snow fell all day, and the roads became slicker and slicker. But 5 brave families came in their pajamas and we had a great time. "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" all got names..........Cameron, Emerson, Marin, Arianna and Molly.

I wish I had pictures to post, but my camera battery died. Like I said earlier, the day was a bit problematic.

I'll keep you posted on our next pajama gathering. They are lots of fun, no matter how many show up!!!!!

Weekly Story Times

Our regular weekly Story Time schedule picks up again on Monday, November 15. However, there will be a new twist for some -- therapy dogs!!!!!!

The Monday morning 3, 4 and 5 year group will be joined by Gus, a golden retriever who has visited us once before. Gus is new to the therapy field, but loves his job. He spends most of his time visiting senior citizens, but loves children and is looking forward to diversifying.

Paxton, a black lab, will be spending Wednesday afternoons with our Wacky Wednesday group. Paxton was trained as a seeing eye dog, but due to a minor physical ailment was unable to continue. Instead he has been working with children, frequently on a one-on-one environment, and so should fit right in with our Wednesday crowd. He loves to perform tricks, and hopefully he can teach my kids how to "sit"!

My first Pajama Story Time was a great success, at least by my standards. Lot's of my regular story time kids came, and brought their older brothers and sisters -- many of whom I remember from their story time days! We had some children and parents whose schedule doesn't allow for weekly story time, but still love stories! And we even had a few people who I didn't recognize, but was so happy to see!

All in all we had fun reading some old favorites and some new soon-to-be favorites. I hope to do this again in a few months, so keep your eyes and ears open updates.

With the kids home from school on Thursday, Veteran's Day, we were fortunate to have animator Kelly Mihal teach some lucky students all about animation, character design, and pixilation. -- I could hear lots of laughter coming from the room, always a great fun indicator! And then I found them working away on their flip-books so diligently that they didn't even notice me taking pictures!

Well, we just finished my favorite week of the year - Halloween party week!!!!

All the kids looked adorable in their costumes, and they are so excited to go Trick or Treating!

We take a two week break from our regular schedule to recover from the sugar high, and then back to it starting November 15th.

However, as a special treat to me and the kids, we are having a "Pajama Story Time". I have never done this before, but it should be great fun!! It is open to kids of all ages, as long as they agree to wear their pajamas and slippers and bring their special bedtime friend. I know I will!

I am taking suggestions for favorite bedtime stories, so stop by the library and let me know what you think.

Our Thursday Craft Nights are still loads of fun and looking for more people to join in and enjoy! We have been fortunate to have Linda Selbert come and work on some painting project with us. The first was a painted glass votive, the second was a holiday snowman decoration. In January she will be back to help us with a grapes and vines on glass.

On November 4th, we will have a professional designer, courtesy of Elizabeth Lynne Gifts & Floral Design, teach us how to make spectacular bows for home holiday decorating and gift packages. This is a free class, sponsored by the Friends of the Macedon Public Library Endowment Fund, and will be held in the Community Room from 6:00 - 7:45 p.m.

Evergreen is up and running and, after some brain exhausting days, we are ready to handle almost any question you throw at us (if you are patient). And we would like to thank all of our patrons for their patience during this transition and learning period. You have all been awesome!

Also, we have finally been able to enter all of the new books and movies that have been piling up waiting while the system was in limbo for a month. These new items are too numerous to list here, so come in and peruse our "new shelves" and "DVD book", and see what we have!!!

A great big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who supported the Friends of the Macedon Library semi-annual Book Sale this past weekend!

Approximately $1,900 was raised and this will benefit the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library.

Good job, everyone!

For those of you who have been anxiously awaiting the transition to our new system and website -- it works!!

Please take your time and go through the new site. Naturally, it will take longer to look for things and understand the intricacies of finding and putting items on hold, but patience is a virtue we must draw on now. I think everyone will be pleased with the changes.
