This week was an exciting one in the Story Time room!! But luckily there were many smiles and we are looking forward to future visits.

Weekly Story Times

Our regular weekly Story Time schedule picks up again on Monday, November 15. However, there will be a new twist for some -- therapy dogs!!!!!!

The Monday morning 3, 4 and 5 year group will be joined by Gus, a golden retriever who has visited us once before. Gus is new to the therapy field, but loves his job. He spends most of his time visiting senior citizens, but loves children and is looking forward to diversifying.

Paxton, a black lab, will be spending Wednesday afternoons with our Wacky Wednesday group. Paxton was trained as a seeing eye dog, but due to a minor physical ailment was unable to continue. Instead he has been working with children, frequently on a one-on-one environment, and so should fit right in with our Wednesday crowd. He loves to perform tricks, and hopefully he can teach my kids how to "sit"!

Kids in the Library

My first Pajama Story Time was a great success, at least by my standards. Lot's of my regular story time kids came, and brought their older brothers and sisters -- many of whom I remember from their story time days! We had some children and parents whose schedule doesn't allow for weekly story time, but still love stories! And we even had a few people who I didn't recognize, but was so happy to see!

All in all we had fun reading some old favorites and some new soon-to-be favorites. I hope to do this again in a few months, so keep your eyes and ears open updates.

With the kids home from school on Thursday, Veteran's Day, we were fortunate to have animator Kelly Mihal teach some lucky students all about animation, character design, and pixilation. -- I could hear lots of laughter coming from the room, always a great fun indicator! And then I found them working away on their flip-books so diligently that they didn't even notice me taking pictures!

Story Times

Well, we just finished my favorite week of the year - Halloween party week!!!!

All the kids looked adorable in their costumes, and they are so excited to go Trick or Treating!

We take a two week break from our regular schedule to recover from the sugar high, and then back to it starting November 15th.

However, as a special treat to me and the kids, we are having a "Pajama Story Time". I have never done this before, but it should be great fun!! It is open to kids of all ages, as long as they agree to wear their pajamas and slippers and bring their special bedtime friend. I know I will!

I am taking suggestions for favorite bedtime stories, so stop by the library and let me know what you think.

Please join us in the Community Room on Wednesday, November 10th at 6:45 p.m.

Thursday Crafts

Our Thursday Craft Nights are still loads of fun and looking for more people to join in and enjoy! We have been fortunate to have Linda Selbert come and work on some painting project with us. The first was a painted glass votive, the second was a holiday snowman decoration. In January she will be back to help us with a grapes and vines on glass.

On November 4th, we will have a professional designer, courtesy of Elizabeth Lynne Gifts & Floral Design, teach us how to make spectacular bows for home holiday decorating and gift packages. This is a free class, sponsored by the Friends of the Macedon Public Library Endowment Fund, and will be held in the Community Room from 6:00 - 7:45 p.m.
To register, stop by the library or call us at 315-986-5932.

Evergreen

Evergreen is up and running and, after some brain exhausting days, we are ready to handle almost any question you throw at us (if you are patient). And we would like to thank all of our patrons for their patience during this transition and learning period. You have all been awesome!

Also, we have finally been able to enter all of the new books and movies that have been piling up waiting while the system was in limbo for a month. These new items are too numerous to list here, so come in and peruse our "new shelves" and "DVD book", and see what we have!!!

Books Sale

A great big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who supported the Friends of the Macedon Library semi-annual Book Sale this past weekend!

Approximately $1,900 was raised and this will benefit the Friends Endowment for the Macedon Public Library.

Good job, everyone!

EVERGREEN WORKS!!

For those of you who have been anxiously awaiting the transition to our new system and website -- it works!!

Please take your time and go through the new site. Naturally, it will take longer to look for things and understand the intricacies of finding and putting items on hold, but patience is a virtue we must draw on now. I think everyone will be pleased with the changes.

Please feel free to call us with any questions or problems, and we will do our best to help.

Holiday Painting

Thanks to a grant by the Friends of the Macedon Public Library, our Thursday Art & Craft Classes are filling up. So please come in and sign up as soon as you can.

Next up:

Thursday, October 7, from 6:00-7:45 p.m.
in the Community Room at the Macedon Public Library.

Temporary Changes at MPL

By now most of you are aware that the entire Pioneer Library System will be facing big changes next week. There will be a few temporary inconveniences, but we know that you'll be patient as we work through them together.

1. Our website will be unavailable from 5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3rd, through Thursday, October 7th. At that time you will be unable to put any items on hold, pay fines, or access your account in any way.

2. The Macedon Public Library will be open for regular hours on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, October 4th - October 6th, and all scheduled programs will be held without a change. The computers will be available and you will be able to take items out, too. However, you MUST have your library card with you these days as we are unable to access your account any other way.

3. We will be unable to return items during this 3 day time period, so, if you want to hold on to your items for a few days longer, please do. Fines will be waived until we catch up!

4. The Macedon Public Library will be closed Thursday, October 7th, until noon. When we reopen everything should be back to normal for our patrons (the staff, however, may look a little frazzled..........)

Again, thank you for your anticipated patience, and let's embrace this change with the optimism the Macedon Public Library staff and patrons are noted for!!

Banned Books Week

Banned Books week is September 25 to October 4, 2010

Banned Books Week was launched in response to a sudden surge in the the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than a 1,000 books have been challenged since its inception in 1982.

People challenge books that they say are too sexual or too violent. They object to profanity and slang, offensive portrayals of racial or religious groups, or positive portrayals of homosexuals.

For some, a ban on a book just makes it more appealing.
Here are some titles, you decide.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien
The Call of the Wild by Jack London
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JR Rowling

Changes Coming to OWWL

On October 7th the Pioneer Library System's catalog will now be powered by Evergreen, so you will notice some changes when you log on to the OWWL.org website. Once you navigate through the site you will notice that you now have more control over your account, such as choosing your own user name and password, suspending holds while you are on vacation, and creating bookbags to keep track of books you have read, those you want to read, and for any other reason you can think of.

The only temporary downside to this change-over is that the website will be unavailable from 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 3 until Thursday, October 7. At that time you will be unable to put books on hold, pay fines, or access your account in any way. However, the Macedon Public Library will be open regular hours and you will be able to check out items.

We are very excited about this change, and we hope you will be too. We only ask for a little patience as we learn the new system together.

and 42 Libraries together for you.

Display Case

As many of you may or not may know, the display case on the southwest side of the library is available to the public to display their collections or anything that may be of interest to the community. We have had collections of ladybugs, owls, and music boxes, as well as patriotic and historical displays. This month we are very fortunate to have sisters Anna Shearer and Theresa Truax return with one of their very intricate themed displays...school.
Please stop in and see their interpretation of the alphabet!

Friends Programming

Our Black Bear presentation last night was a huge success!! We were glad to see so many of our patrons were interested in these fascinating creatures, and we thank Greg Fuerst of the DEC for his informative talk.

Next up....the Friends of the Macedon Public Library will sponsor "Aging, Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease", presented by Eve Moses of the Education Coordinator for the Alzheimer Association. Ms. Moses will discuss what is normal aging, and what is not. She will also discuss the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's Disease, what are the risk factors and warning signs, and provide strategies to help people with dementia and their caregivers. This presentation will be in the Community Room of the Macedon Public Library on Wednesday, October 20th at 6:30 p.m.

Newbery Challenge

The Summer Reading Program is officially over! How do I know? We had our annual Newbery Challenge Pizza Party on Wednesday!

This year we had 15 kids complete the challenge - read 6 Newbery Books in 6 weeks - and 11 of them were able to attend our pizza party, sponsored by the Reliant Community Credit Union. We discussed the books we read while enjoying pizza and cookies, then the kids went home with much deserved prizes and gifts. This year's crowd was probably one of our youngest, we makes us doubly proud of their accomplishment.

Summer's Final Program

To celebrate the end of our summer reading program, the Reliant Community Credit Union and the Friends of the Macedon Public Library sponsored "Balloon Crazy and Face Painting", a fun-filled afternoon with Jim and Cindy Pelc of Just Clowning Around. Jim taught us about the history and science behind balloons while Cindy painted faces.

The fun ended with cookies and lemonade provided by the Friends.

Bridge Building

A great big Thank You goes to Phil and Carole Klingler for their workshop this afternoon on Bridge Building. I've never had so many quiet kids in one room as they worked away on designing and constructing their bridge.

Children's Summer Reading

Our summer reading program has been such a success that even Jefferson has wanted to get in on the fun and read to the kids!

Playing With Water

What can be more fun on a dreadfully hot day than coming to an air conditioned library to stay cool? Well, our page, Nina DiLapi, and these kids know that it's water balloon games!! Although the morning started out rainy, by 1:00 it was hot and humid and we were ready to go.

Rhythm and Drumming

Today we were fortunate to have Ed Keegan of Rhythm Connect in Fairport, teach a drumming and rhythm workshop. It was a bit noisy for a library, but hey, it's summer!

Some of the kids were very seriously discovering their untapped talents, but many just had happy smiles!

Animals!!

Yesterday we were fortunate to have John and Rose Crocitto of CroZoo, Zoological Educational Services, come and bring their "World of Amphibians and Reptiles" to our library. We had a full house, who all enjoyed seeing and touching the many creatures, including a bearded dragon, a blue tongued skink and a very large millipede!

Caricature Drawing

Ed Fortuna, one of our area's talented artists, graciously held another workshop with the kids this summer. This time it was caricature drawing - making those we love look a little exaggerated and silly. Look at those smiles!

Pete the Pirate

Thanks to A Barrel of Fun Productions, Pete the Pirate brought his Sea Faring Folly Show to visit us today. There was singing, puppets and magic. What more could we ask for on a soggy afternoon!!!

Scrapbooking

Our summer fun continued Thursday with Scrapbooking. Kathy Roberts generously agreed to help the kids make a scrapbook out of paperbags. What a clever idea! And everyone went home with a work of art and their memories.

Nate & Kate's Kids Show

On Wednesday we were visited by Nate and Kate Marshall who performed their musical juggling show for us in the community room. They even let some of the kids help with their performance.

Afterward, our Wacky Wednesday kids were treated to a juggling workshop!

There were lots of smiles!!!!!!
